Another DUMB question .

Post by Lu47Dan » Tue Oct 14, 2008 2:06 pm

While cleaning parts this weekend for the final drives , I noticed that there is a lot of wear on the axle shaft where the seal rides , the dumb question is should I build this area back up or just leave it be ? The machinist I had make the seal installation tool , can clean up the surface after I weld it up to give it a good surface finish . I will post a couple of pictures once I get figure out how to take them   Dan .

I sure would, no better time than while you have it apart. I had my MC done years ago.

Dan; Had the same issue with my 1010. JD will sell you a rebuild for around $350. I used 309L wire and welded mine up myself. The dozer is not in service yet but I do not expect an problems other that normal wear. Some time back I posted some pictures and discriptions of work perfomed. If you do not find them let me know and I will point them out. Mark.
oxy/acetelyne powder welding would be the best method but my set up is to small for 2 1/2" shafts

Mark , Thanks for posting that , good information . I will have to see what stainless wire I have in the shop , I think all I have left is 316 ( 20 lb box of it ) right now . Winter is fast approaching and other projects have moved to the front of the to do list , so it will be a couple of weeks before I can even attempt the build up on the axle shaft . Dan
