440 final drive problem

Post by Randynscottsboro » Mon Nov 10, 2008 10:49 am

Installed the final drive on my new toy yesterday, but have a problem. This unit has been off the crawler for 2 years and I am not completely sure if the steering clutches have been disassembled or not. It was tore down for a noise or funny feel in the clutch pack. It was determained that the throw-out bearing coller was damaged and was replaced, that where the re-assembly stopped 2 years ago. Now that I have it back together it still has a funny feel and popping sound when you pull the lever almost like a clutch nuckling in. Any ideas will be appreicated before I go any further with diagnosis or assembly.
Thanks
Randy

It sounds like your clutch is grossly out of adjustment, and it is popping the balls out of their cups at the throwout bearing. Your steering lever should only come back a couple inches.
