Sometimes I hate crawlers
Sometimes I hate crawlers
Just quit working for the night on my new 1010C that followed me home on Sunday. The drive coupling between the prop shaft and the input shaft stripped out. What a royal PITA, pretty much a full days work pulling engine and center section to replace a less than $100 part. Unfortunately that is going to be the cheap piece, probably another $1000 in incendentals that need to or will get replaced on the way back together. Of course, then it is time to see if the engine even runs!
Sometimes I think I should have picked knitting or something like that for a hobby.

Lavoy . good thing I was not drinking coffee when I read your post . Working on these old machines is one of those hobbies that might not be easy but the reward in the end is a more than most other hobbies could wish for . A running operating crawler that you use for many things other than just taking to shows . Unlike classic or antique cars once you are done with them , they are not consuming all your time , washing waxing and pampering them . . Dan

Used diesel engines are an adventure any way you look at them !!

It really is not all that bad, it is just amazing how one small part can stop a crawler in it's tracks (like that joke?)! And then, it is a couple days labor just to get to that small part.
It's actually going pretty good, got a couple new bearings in the tranny, fixed some broken bolts and misc stuff. Once the coupling shows up, then the center section goes back in, and time to hang the engine back in, and the reassembly continues. Someone had taken parts of this crawler off 10 years ago or more, so it is kind of a puzzle, and some of the puzzle pieces are missing.

You're right about that, I can only think of 2 things that I've brought home that didnt require disassebaly, and both of them had a 5 digit price tag I think I'll spend my time in the shop making due with my old stuff and keep a little money in my pocket.Stretch wrote:Don't the directions always say " Some assembly required " or in our case some disassembly required.

We might be looking at this all wrong.
Women have hobbies to maintain their sanity while dealing with men & children. (My bad, according to my wife I'm still a kid)
So we have our little hobbies to maintain our sanity dealing with the war department.
At least we can tell the wife that the only thing that catches our eye anymore is a good looking or not so good looking crawler.
Don't tell her, but I think I like both my 2010's as much as I like her. At least they don't swear back at me. Although I have added a few new words to my vocabulary.

I like the some assembly required, unfortunately, the word some is usually replaced by "extensive" on most of my projects. In fact, the first crawler we ever did came home in many pieces. About 8 years ago, my borhter hauled home a 1010 that had been completely disassembled, the only thing together was the engine. The rest of the crawler was in 5 gallon pails and cardboard boxes, now that one was truly a puzzle.
Got the coupling yesterday, and proceeded to try and hang the center section. Lo and behold, the two main 3/4" bolts on the RH side of the bellhousing were broken off. Hadn't noticed that before, so had to spend more time fixing that. Finally got the center section installed last night. Hope to hang the engine tonight or tomorrow. Found a couple of the missing pieces in a box the guy threw in the back of the pickup, so that was a nice find.
