1010 glow plug replacement

Post by robk » Mon Nov 24, 2008 9:43 pm

Mine came out okay today. I had them all out when I did the injectors last year so I was surprised it was so difficult this time. One of them gave me a slight scare that its threads might be galling but I worked it back and forth with Blaster penetrant for a long time. It got the idea slowly but I had a miserable time getting the plugs extricated from the head after they were unscrewed. Whatever seals it did not want to let it go. They squeaked like hell while unscrewing them and trying to pull them. I rocked and twisted, pulled and pried. They all squawked like the threads were dry. Eventually it would come out.
Why was it fighting me?
How are they sealed?

Secondly, the heater stems down inside the combustion chambers on cyl 3 and 4 were glommed up with guck which I presume is unburned diesel caked on there. Wouldn't the guck insulate the heater and keep it from doing its job to some extent?

The new one's went right in with a touch of Neverseez. The motor fired fast in 40 degree weather. It was tough to start anytime before unless it was still good and hot.

Aren't glow plugs wonderful? I have my brother's 1010 forklift here to work on the house, and started it up Sunday to move it. We have been in the single digits overnight sometimes, and it took right off.
