Anyone got snow???
Yeah right I'm moving snow with a small 4wd JD with a back blade and loader right now but it's getting too deep. I'm in the early repair/rebuild work on my 420 and plan mounting a 6 way blade on it. There's no way it'll be done this year so it looks like I'll have to start the D-4. I have a 1/2 mile drive to keep clean and it is in the mts and on a hill side. I DO NOT get to close to the edge with a tractor.
To my original question. When I have the 420 (5 roller) and 6 way blade operating, how will it compare to the D-4 (straight blade)?? I know it is much smaller and lighter. How are they for traction on hard packed snow??
When the 420 is running, the JD wheely will probably not be used except for around the shop and garage where I sometimes have to bucket it over the rocks on the edge. This will eliminate the problem of the shrinking drive as I can't push snow out past the previous berm. I'll be able to keep the whole drive cleaned off.
One really nice thing about my new shop is I will be able to keep it inside and always warm. It can share space with the JD wheely. I just hope they can get along

Weather in my part of Maine has been all over the place this month, but looks like it's finally settled into winter. We have 4 or 5 inches on the ground and expect a pretty good amount this weekend. I grew up in Western Washington and my sister tells me they go a huge amount in the Arlington area. Snow in the Seattle to Everett area was always "fun".
I keep the homestead clear with an old (1986) 1 ton 4x4 and a 9' plow. Last year we had a lot of snow and I managed to pile up a 6' tall by 15' by 35' "mountain" of snow for the kids to play on.
Enjoy your white Christmas Gus.

We got 10" give or take last weekend, but with 30-50 MPH winds for 30+ hours, it is kind of hard to tell. The lawn is almost bare, the trees have 3 feet or more. Predicting 3-7" for this weekend, but not as much wind, hope it comes down nicely and covers everything up.
A 420 will not push with a D4 in a straight push, just not as much power. That being said, I think in certain conditions, a good 420 with a reverser will probably outwork the D4 in terms of work done depending on the area you are working in. Especially if you angle the dozer to clear a driveway, then they are slick. I'm using an MC right now until I get the 1010 up and running, but have used a 420 in most of the preceeding years up til now.

Been snowing on and off for a weeek. Getting tired of it. need to blade driveway again, had to chain up to get back to the this morning. Not taht much snow, but combined witha steep driveway, it get bad will snow all day today, then change to freezing rain. Got abgout 12 inches total. A lot for here west of Portland Oregon. MC works good for snow!!

It is an after market "noname?" (came off of a 420). It has 4 way power, not on the angle, but I'm considering adding it when I mount it. A little welding and another cylinder would make it into a power 6 way. A really neat feature is that it has wings that swing out when it's angled. Perfect for snow. The blade is an inboard mount and needs some minor work and the hyd rebuilt but it's in good shape overall.Ray III wrote:Are you talking a power 6 way blade or the manual model 62 blade?
Just wondering if anyone has ever modified a blade off a 440 to fit a 420.

Snow & ice storm
Ditto over here in New Boston. Got our power back at 6:10 Tuesday night and consider ourselves VERY fortunate! I ran our 8.5KW generator non stop from Friday AM to Tuesday PM @ $1.00 per hour for gasoline! We lived normally except for the clothes drier! Man, I HATE sctatchy towels! I've been re-arranging flakes the last couple of days as well as working on fire wood.KenP wrote:Likewise, we got a good amount of snow overnight... on top of the 12 inches we got two days ago. With the wind (presently gusting to 25-30 mph and the temps in the single digits, its blowing and drifting all over.
Looking out the window, it looks like its about 12 inches in some places and easily triple that in others. Wind chill right now is -7F.
The Plan is to relax, have a great breakfast, and wait for the skies to lighten a bit. Then, its plow time...
We had that record ice storm last week and went without power for 6 days.... we're back on the grid but many are still out and are being told maybe another week! Local authorities are urging folks to find shelter at warming centers but many of the crusty New Englanders are staying put.
So, yep, we got snow!
