MC Blade

Post by MikeT » Thu Feb 05, 2009 7:00 pm

I have a MC that I bought with a new idea high lift blade. It's worn out and would rather have a dozer blade on it. There are no mc close by to my knowledge for a pattern to build the frame work. Can I copy a 420 and that would get me close enough to what I would want? Thanks for any input.

The concept will be the same, just don't make it as heavy as a 420 blade, and keep the moldboard as close to the front of the crawler as possible.

I built a blade for my 3 roller 40 that can be easily fitted and removed. If you check out http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... php?t=1705 you will see that to connect the blade to the crawler I drive over the sub-frame, connect the hoses and retract the rams which raises the rear of the sub-frame until it lines up with the rear crossbar. I then inch forward until the slots on the sub-frame engage, then I extend the rams raising the front of the sub-frame to met the front crossbar, inch forward some more and attach the clamps. Takes about 5 minutes to fit - removel is quicker.

Rex,
I wasn't monitoring this board back in March 2007, so I didn't see the pictures of your dozer frame until now. You did a masterful job of fabricating a major addition to your JD40. I am constantly impressed with the skills and the industriousness of the members of this board in extending the lives and usefulness of their crawlers. Nice job!

Sweet job on the blade set up!

If I was going to build one the biggest thing I'd change would be mounting rams on both sides, not just on one side like the on the MC/40. I completely rebuilt mine using heavier gauge metal and the left side still doesn't lift equally, much less have and down pressure.

Thanks for the kind words guys it's much appreciated.
I built the blade like that as I use the 40 around the farm as well - rolled a 12 acre paddock with it the other day, made a nice smooth job with no wheel ruts! But I figured you don't need to haul a blade around when you'r doing something like that.

Mike
I found building my blade was a lot of fun and I'm sure yours will be too. But getting to use it is the real payback.
I'd be real interested in any progress photos you care to post and definitely want to see the final result.

The blade on my MC was home made, but not by me. It will tilt but will not angle. the tilt feature is nice for cleaning out ditches. Two rams. [/img]

That looks pretty well built, I wonder if it might not have been a jobber blade for the MC, or at least started life as a jobber blade for another brand of crawler.

I like that tilt cylinder. I have been contemplating if that would work or not, so now I know it will. I am going to cobble one out for my blade. There is already a double valve assy on the machine.

I purchased the machine from the John Deere dearer in Grangesville Idaho in 1979. The pump that was on it was a underpowered belt driven vane pump. Finially got around to replacing it with an orginial pump this winter just before the snow hit. the Push beams are just two pieces of u-channel welded together. Had to repair them in the 80's when I was pushing a lot of stumps out. It is a nice running machine.
