And the fun begins
And the fun begins
Well, I got the 40C into the garage, tracks split and started working on the left final drive. There's a lot of play on the outboard end of the axle, so much that the track will walk off the sprocket. Found this out after having the tracks jump twice in an hour. The left side steers okay, the right side doesn't but it used to. It was better before I "fixed" it. the foot brakes are unhooked on both sides. There are a few other problems but nothing major.
So today I went after the left side final. I got the drive sprocket off with a screw jack, that was an hour of fun. Then it was simply unbolting things, skinning a few knuckles and bleeding a lot, and then the final was lifted off easily enough. Right off I saw saw the rusty, dried grease and oil, the missing brake band material, etc. The throw out looks okay and there's no sign of oil in the brake area that isn't there from me accidentally pouring some in there, so that's good. The final- well, the axle moves about 1/8" at least up and down, the input shaft ( not sure of the term) has quite a bit of play too. There are no shims on the caps. I think the answer is going to be to tear this all apart, put in new bearings and races after getting everything clean and then putting it back together. There's no take up left that I can see. The finals really need a good flush anyway- rusty, dirty lube built up an everything. Oh, and some one has been in there ahead of me with a welder! Oh boy.
So anyway, the book say you get the axle out by standing it on a pipe and driving the axle out. Is that the best way?

As soon as I loosened the bearing cap it came right out. The bearings are all trashed bad, I'm going to need all the bearings and races in that side, I figure the other will be as bad. One of the bearings had been screwed with before and was missing one roller form the cage! The outboard seal is trash too.
Are lining kits for the brake band still available?

Brett, The name of the place is : Precision Parts Rebuilders, There # is 256-238-0313. It would probally be better for you to talk to them directly. I talked to them this morning and they said they could put what ever material you want on there.

Stopped by my local big time tractor repair guys place today and asked about finding someone to try and line my brakes. Turns out he and the local Amish had been through this before and he'd done another 40 or 420 some time back. Cost about $16.00 per side. Here's his source for lining and he has the rivets etc. Glad I stopped!

I have one good, almost new, brake on my parts machine and from what I can see it looks like a semi-metalic brake lining. I'm figuring go with the medium friction stuff. Any thoughts on that?

Lousy day here yesterday so i worked on the 40. Got the right final off. What did I find inside? About 3 cups of cruddy gear lube, a mess of broken nuts and bolts and springs and a CROSS CHAIN FROM SET OF TRUCK CHAINS!!!!! No clue how long that chain had been in there. One of my kids could have dropped it in 4 or 5 years ago or 10 or 15 years ago or it could have been there for decades. I'm amazed something didn't break.
