replacing steering clutches

Post by robotmaker » Fri Feb 13, 2009 8:12 am

I hope you have the maintenance manual. I just went thru replacing steering clutches and found that the hardest part was putting new cotter pins in the linkages for the throwout bearing. You have to be a contortionist just to GET into this area, let alone trying to hit a hole you can't see.

I do have a manual I think it is as old as my crawler and the steering clutch part seems to be the most worn. Is there any tips or tools you suggest for putting in the cotter pins?

TIA

I think the hardest part is getting the shaft out to replace the clutchs. :x Everything else is a piece of cake.
It took me longer to get shafts out than to go back together.

I bought a 5 lb slide hammer like my book shows I hope that will make it a little easier. Does anyone know off hand what size bolt I need to go into the end of the shaft?

TIA

I am about ready to go back together I discovered when I broke it down that I need to have my brake relined. My question is can I put the clutches in and then put the brake band in as long as I don't put the housing back on? This would allow me to get the sprocket back on and the track back together while I am waiting.

Thanks In Advance

If I remember right, I believe you can snake the brake band around the hub.
