There are adjustment bolts on the pressure plates, so is there a reason I cannot increase the tension to get more use out of slipping clutches?

Yes, you can, there is a bulletin in the Faq's section that details this. However, if your springs are weak or broken, or there is oil on the clutch plates, this will have minimal effect, and the clutch needs to be rebuilt.
To do the adjustment, you will need to remove the final drive, so there is some work involved. The question then becomes whether or not it is worth that much work to put back in questionable parts that may or may not work. If then don't, then you have to do it all over again to put in the new parts.

Lavoy is right. You would probably be better off buying new fiber disks from him at the very least. Unless you find the pressure plate to be so weak that you can easily operate it by hand, or you find broken springs, it is optimistic to think that adjusting the pressure plate will solve your problems. You do however want to make sure that the pressure from all three fingers is equal. This is probably more important than determining what the exact pressure setting should be.
