440 reverser adjustment

Post by d-fishman » Thu Mar 05, 2009 9:19 pm

Can someone help me out
I have a 440 ICD 1960 (a great machine)
I have got the books from Brad On CD (Thankyou Brad)
One of my first things to do was drain all fluids, Reverser had milky oil and everything else was dirty but up to proper levels.
Next was to adjust the reverser clutches reverse tension about have of the forward tension
Hear is the problem when I remove the rear plug to adjust the clutch I can see the notched ring but cannot see the pin you need to
press in to allow you to turn the ring
I can wiggle the entire ring and it moves a little bit won't allow me to rotate the shaft around to find the pin
Am I missing something or what am I Not doing Right
Front Clutch adjustment no Problem can move shaft (as the book says) Find the Pin Move ring one Notch back up to spec

I have started crawler and moved forward and back (thought maybe clutches stuck due to milky oil in reverser)
Didn't seem to make any difference still unable to move rear shaft to locate pin.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, glad the CD finally made it to you. I wonder why it takes so long to get mail between the US and Canada?

Have you posted any pictures of your crawler? Also, what is its serial number?

Rear hub is fixed, it does not rotate. Look in with an inspection mirror, flashlight, whatever, and see if you can see the pin. If you can't, then my guess is that someone installed the rear hub in the wrong position. A friend of mine has one like that. If this is what happened to yours, then you may be in for some work.

Thanks guys for the info
Adjustment close to spec would like it a bit tighter
I will check with a mirror closer when I change the oil again
Thanks Dave
