:? if its got 2 cylinders (2-53) and tracks its a 440 icd if its got 3 cylinders (3-53) and wheels its a pettibone skidder. Mother Deere,to the best of my limited knowledge never used a 3-53 in nothin.

I have read somewhere that the inspection hole was deleted by GM during the time these engines were built. My parts manual PC-609 with date Jan-66 on pages 10-2 & 3 shows the cover was only used thru s/n 2D 4009. The drain tube apparently changes length at 2D 5160 from 14-3/8" to 2-7/16". It should be under/behind the govenor assembly on the left side of the engine if you were seated on the seat. I have yet to find the serial number on one of these engines. It is supposed to be on the right rear of the block (behind the blower??).

I have a late model 440ICD and mine had the short breather tube. Also I did manage to find the serial number but at the moment can't remember where I found it. Seems like it was in one of the top corners.

I vaguely recall mine having the inspection hole but I can't seem to locate a picture that shows it and the motor is about 600 miles away from me at the moment.

Here is a picture showing the breather tube:
