2010 Tachometer Cable

Post by RedDirt » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:59 pm

My 2010 Tachometer Cable is broken at the engine end, the spring cable inside is sheered off.

I got the tach and cable out and now I cannot remove the cable from the tach.

Anyone know how to seprate the cable from the tach without damaging the tach? My tach appears to work when I spin the cable, so I'm hoping to just replace the cable.

Any advice on this?

Thanks,

did you take the housing off of the tach? if you are trying to pull the cable out from the engine end of the housing it wont come out it has to come out the top end. if the cable is stuck in the tach with the housing off then you will just have pull like hell it should come out hope this helps RICHARD

I took the tach out of the panel and have the tach and cable assembly out on the bench. The cable has a threaded connector connecting to the tachometer housing. I have the threads loose however the wound spring and its brass end appear to be fused to the input of the tach housing. I've pulled as hard as I feel comfortable fearing deforming the tachometer and it won't release.

Anyone been inside the tach? Is there a set screw or something that holds the rotating input of the cable to the tach?

Thanks,

That did it. I held the round brass end with some pliers and clamped the cable with some other plyers and leveraged them against each other. The square end of the cable slid out of the tachometer input it was really wedged in there.

Now it seems that 45 years of engine oil vapors have gotten up in the tach and are oozing around when I turn the tach.

Is there any way to open the tachometer to get to the innards and clean it up, wash the glass on the inside and clean out the oil?

Any good source for a new tach cable?

2010 tach cable

Post by 2010OWNER » Tue Mar 31, 2009 9:00 pm

I just bought a new tach cable for the neighbor's crawler from Deere, $58
Outer shell is included.
I don't know if you can get just the cable. Many years ago you could buy speedometer repair cables from the local auto parts store. Don't know if you could make one fit anyway.

Thanks for that. I guess I better figure out where the Deere dealer is around here.

I need the whole cable in and outer shell. It looks like the inner cable snapped due to the outer cable being slightly crushed.
