When I picked up my latest project, a 58 440IC, Outside blade, the previous owner had an extra sprocket he had bought as NOS but sure wasn't. The casting number on the sprocket is M *09* T. I am pretty sure the first * is a 3 but the second * can be either 8 or 9. Is there a measurement that will identify it as late or early? I need to get the engine running and see if it is worth saving or parting out. It is s/n 444315 and several parts missing. Tracks are only 35 shoes (mostly 14" 2 bolt) so it is going to need plenty of help. Only good thing is it will roll.

Bryce,
Up to and including serial number 456801 the following part # are used:
regular T 16261 T (previous # M3098T)
snow T 16259 T (previous # M3099T)
From serial number 456802 on the following part # are used:
regular T 16262 T (previous # T10559T)
snow T 16260 T (previous # T13262T)
The difference between the serial number change point is how deep
the sprocket dish from one to another. I do not know which one has the
deeper dish (teeth center to mounting flange machined surface).
I hope this helps.

I guess I was reading the parts manual wrong and what I really want to know is what is the difference between a regular sproket and a SNOW (whatever that is) sprocket? And how to tell them apart? The change at the late serial number is to run the same chain as the 1010 I think.

I went back and looked at my parts lists since I didn't remember any thing about SNOW?? sprockets when I was looking before and truly the casting M 3098 T is a regular sprocket thru s/n 456801 and M 3099 T is a regular sprocket after s/n 456801. Got to looking in the IC parts list for the final drive assembly and found the clue. The stub axle for s/n 456801 and earlieer comes with three 1/2"x1-1/8" dowel pins while the later stub axle comes with three 7/8"x1-3/8" dowel pins. So I can measure the three holes in the sprocket M 3098 T = 1/2" holes and M 3099 T = 7/8" holes. The ICD parts list does NOT mention dowel pin dia. Still don't have the faintest idea what a SNOW?? sprocket is. LOL

Snow sprockets are relieved at the bottom of the cup to help alleviate the pressure of snow that gets packed in there. If you run in snow at temps above freezing, it packs in everywhere and the tracks get fiddle tight. Snow sprockets are quite rare, I think I have one, mabye two used ones, but not a matched pair.

Well the spare sprocket I bought has three 7/8" holes for the dowels. Looked at my three toys 440IC #444315, 440ICD/831 #449895, and 440ICD/831 #460196 and the best I can tell they all have the big dowels. One of them has the nuts on the outside.
Lavoy, What is the model number for the outside manual adjust blade for a 440IC? and do you have a good blade? This one has the stock outside frame but everything forward of the angle pivot point is homemade junk. Gotta get it running first.
