John Deere 420 Tracks

Post by /J^ » Fri Nov 18, 2005 6:46 pm

I have a four-roller 420 that I am having trouble getting the tracks to line up (pull tight) enough to get the pin through them. Does anyone have a tip or suggestion of how to make this work a little easier.
Thanks in advance
GC

Have you backed the adjusters off all the way?

Hello guys
I split the track on my cat d-2 and reassembled then with a pipe clamp and several ratchet straps Use good ones as the cheap ones don't hold up to the tension very well at all
Cost me bottom part of my overhead door
Hope this helps

GC,
I tried to post earlier and it got lost in cyberspace. One way
for getting track back together is to work the split
on the sprocket then the sprocket teeth will hold each end
close enough to get the pin in.Get the split at about three
oclock and you will be good to go.JimAnderson

Hello, I picked up a track strecher on ebay a number of years ago and it works quite well. It is on the same line as a bar clamp, but it is specifically made for track pads. The one I have is military surplus. Check out ebay.

I know Coleman's Military Surplus sells them for ~$25. They are in PA and I forget the website but I'm sure it can be found with a google search.

Streamfitter- how well does that track jack work? I know i asked about one a few months ago and am about to be putting a track back together. Didn't know if it would be worth it. I know some people have said just use the sprocet method as a track jack you have to tension the whole thing / support it in the center as you do it.

Jimmy, I have always had a front throw, because of bad bogies. I have split the track once or twice and used the puller to pull it all back together. It worked quite well. I bought mine from a surplus dealer by Savahna IL. I will try to post a picture of it this week. Steamfitter99
