Cracked Block

Post by Pistonman » Sun May 17, 2009 10:19 pm

Well, more bad news from the machinist today. My 420C block had sleeves in it, machinist said it was funny that they were not pressed in, they seemed to be glued with epoxy or permatex. Well when he bored them out we found out why- water jacket to cyl cracks. So now I need a block to go with the head I already need. The search begins for a 420 block. I am trying to remember, I think 430 and 440 gas are the same as 420?

Only difference is the 430/440 block has a dipstick on the RH side.

I have a very late 420 W. It has the same engine block part number as the 430/440, but the bigger dip stick hole on the right side is not drilled out. The dip stick is on the left side like the older block.
Any one have any idea why JD would do this?
1959 JD 440ICD w/64 Power Angle Tilt Blade
1959 JD 440ICD w/63 Manual Angle Blade
1959 JD 440IC w/602 Manual Angle Blade
1959 JD 730D W SE (many options)
1950 JD M S w/M-20 Mower
1952 JD M W
1955 FORD 640 (burns the most fuel)

I have had a few, and seen many more, only on high serial number machines. Deere knew that the 430/44 were coming out, and had already developed the block for use on them. Considering that the rest of the block is the same, my guess is when they used up the current stock of 420 blocks, they started using the new casting, and just did not drill them out. You will also find 420's with the late block and the dipstick is machined out. Many times this means a new block has been installed, and the 430/440 block was the replacement block available from Deere. If you look at these blocks, some do not have serial numbers, those I am guessing were new blocks, if it does have a serial number, then I am guessing a used block was installed.

Talked to my JD parts guy today, he worked 20 years at an Equipment wrecker( they still have some old Deeres) so I am going to have him look for me also, but he wanted a part #. For the 420 block I have AT10394T might anyone have some #'s for 430/440 ?
Thanks

The 440IC parts list calls it AT 10394 T and over in the description is the number T 10474T . I have usually thought the number in the description is possibly the raw casting p/n.

The AT10394T must be the late replacement p/n. It comes with some bearings, etc. If I don't get a 1956 block, my new single bolt starter won't work will it.

Starter is dependant on center section, not the block, so no problem there.
If you strike out, I think I have a block here.

That is right, I guess I forgot about starter placement. I will look local to save shipping, but there doesn't seem to be as many in the PNW as the midwest and east.
