I have my neighbors 440ic in the shop replacing the axle in the left final drive. When he bought the machine, the seller told him the ring and pinion was out of it as well. Is there any way to look at the ring and pinion without dropping the winch off the back of it?
Thanks for the help,
Tim
440 final drive questions
If it is one of the big transmission 440ICs there is a small plate (about 3x5") under the seat. If you remove that plate you should be able to see a little of the ring gear, may not be enough to determine if it is bad though. Only thing I know of.

It lives!
I got all the parts in for the machine and got it back together. It seems to be working fine so far. Thanks to Lavoy and Crawler Heaven for all the parts I needed. They are both great to deal with.
On another note, the main clutch won't release completely. If you start the machine in gear, you can shift it and use it fine. If you start it in neutral the clutch won't release enough to let the tranny quit turning. The adjustment feels good, but didn't find much in the book on clutch adjustment. Any ideas???
Thanks for all the help.
