voltage regulator heating up

Post by frozendozer » Mon Jun 01, 2009 11:05 am

i just wired up my jd 440icd. When i start the machine the meter shows that the generator is charging. but when i shut the machine off after only a minute of running, and then let it sit for a few minutes, the voltage regulator gets very hot. when i pull off one of the battery cables from the battery there is a small spark from the wire to the post.

what did i do wrong, i am scared to leave the battery cables on, as i think something is done wrong. the machine does not have a key switch, its wired direct, just press the start button and it work fine?

help

It sounds to me like the cutout relay portion of the VR is not opening up when you shut it off. It will drain the battery. points may be stuck on cutout coil.

I had the same thing happen just last year and yes, it was the VR cut out.
