1953 40c steering clutches

Post by boler76 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:52 pm

This unit has the 7 and 6 clutch pack, was wondering if someone can tell me what the total thickness of the pack should be, Mine looks in good shape but was slipping , Can a disc be added if more thickness is required Thanks

if it has 7 and 6, it has 420 clutch discs installed. Fibers are around .155, steels .093, so you can figure out the height, just multiply by the number of discs. If you can add a disc, the clutch is shot, and all the discs need replacing.

Thanks Lavoy for the measurements, according to that I am .121 short of full thickness , the steels are .90, do you think just fibres changed would be OK also what are the dimensions of the equalizer spring that goes in to the rear end to keep the axle from moving endwise, it is missing, Thanks

Odd, if you are that far out, those fibers must have been in there a while. Yes, new fibers should bring you back up, steels sound fine if they are not rusted so bad they are weakened. You should also set the fingers on the pressure plate with the JD7 gauge once the clutch pack is reassembled.

Sorry, missed that one. I think they are about an inch long give or take. I have them in stock if you need one.

Seems like I heard somewhere that it was either the same as or was a valve spring ??? Seems like mine was very similar.

I would have to have them side by side, but I think about half the length of a valve spring, maybe a little less diameter. It is not a real stiff spring, just keeps outward pressure on the drive shafts.
