Hi, can anyone tell me what JD part number M2768T idler would fit? I just bought a set that was supposed to be for a 440, but it measures 17 3/4" where the chains run. I understand the 440 idlers are supposed to be 19 1/4".
Second question, is anyone looking for a good set of the above? They are shells only with no shafts, and in very good shape as far as wear goes.
thanks,
Keith

Thanks Mark. I took a look at the 40 parts book too, it looks like it was a replacement number? Is it possible that it would have been factory installed on a 440 4 roller? I am just going by the fact that the number is close to the right idler for the 5 roller and the larger 440 idler is also listed as working on the 5 roller 40C. I am assuming it is the whole assembly that interchanges, not just the idler shell. Althought the 420C parts book does not show it, I assume they would also fit the 4 roller version.
Well, it does not matter too much since they do me no good!
Thanks again for the help. I am more of a Case guy and this is a machine my dad has had for 40+ years. I am finding out the hard way that Deere made a lot of changes on these machines.

If someone said it was for a 440 you should get your money back.
Deere used 2 idler wheels, the larger one for 5 roller trackframes. Some 4 rollers used the larger idler, but the smaller one was never used on 5 rollers. Most 40 parts have no business being on a 440.
There sure are a lot of differences, but the changes were made to make the machines stronger as people insisted on using them for industrial purposes whereas they were originally intended simply to pull farm equipment.
