quill removal
im trying to replace the seals in my 420 dozer but cant get the quills to move, i removed all 6 bolts, put a steel rod into the spare hole that looks like the brake rod would go there if it was on the other side. i have used a air chiesel with a ball joint seperator on this rod with no luck. i have cleaned between the quill and housing with a pick, pb blaster and still no movement. am i missing something?? thanks . Quill removal
Eric,
The six bolts are all that holds the quill to the transmission case.
There are no dowels but the close fit between the quill and
the case hold these parts in alignment.Bare steel mating surfaces,
moisture and fifty years of contact can make getting the quills off
a challenge. You may have to drive wedges between the case and
quill if soaking will penetrants doesn't help.JimAnderson

quill
thanks jim,, i gave up, the quills wouldnt move so im going to leave them alone. i checked the trans level and it is full and not leaking by the seals, this machine needed clutches because they were rusted. but nothing was leaking,i wanted to put new ones in, i bought them from lavoy hoping that it would be easy boy was i wrong! i have pounded on these with a hand held sledge hammer for two days.. ill hope for the best and deal with it if it gives out later on.. thanks jim....Eric
Quills?
I'm no expert but when you say quills are you talking about the final drive assembly. this includes the steering clutches. I just took mine off and there are 2 bolts under the transmission that are easy to miss. that makes 8 bolts.

Quills
The quills I was referring to, retain the bearings that support the
transmission ring gear. You are definitely right about the two bolts
at the bottom of the steering clutch housings. You see a lot of
housings that are broken because those bolts are overlooked and
somebody pries the final off.JimAnderson
