They were designed to be worked just like any other machine, but if abused will break just like any other machine. Common sense is really all that is necessary along with regular maintenance.

I only thing you need to remember is a 40-50 year old machine is just that, the fact that these old crawlers move around under their own power after all these years is amazing.
if you have a 1010 in decent shape, you can work them at a reasonable load without much trouble,I treat mine like a "hobby" machine,I would never expect it to hold up to day in and day out use.

The issue ins't so much durability than parts availability. Because the age, many of the parts on them have extensive wear and thus are more prone to fail with heavy use than a newer machine.

Also, some parts for these are not readily available which is another reason many people shy away from them for daily use.

I use a 1010 in my excavation business, not daily, but often. Remember that it isn't big machine. You can't bull your way through something like you can with a 450, you have to work with it and with it's limitations.

I run all older equipement. I have acess to a couple of very good machinists and a tool and die maker and a metal fab shop. This helps me overcome parts availability issues. Something to take into consideration.

your right Terry, the 1010 makes a nice little finish dozer, good for final grading and foundation push back.
1010's are also easy to move around from job to job, their small and don't weight much.
the trouble starts when people start trying to rip stumps, and bang around with boulders, save the heavy work for a big cat.
