rusted bolts

Post by gus » Thu Sep 24, 2009 5:03 pm

What is the best way to remove rusted bolts?? My steering clutches look rusty and the bolts are small and look like they will twist off quite easily

I'm going slow to eliminate future problems.

I've been looking at my clutch problem.. :? Seems that JD engineers saw fit to place the bolts close enough that a 6 pt socket won't go on.

One I tried wanted to round over. I'm considering welding a nut on top that I can get to. Also the heat from the weld should loosen it up a bit.

This can't be a new problem, so how did you fix it??

They've only been in there for 50 years or so

Heat does wonders! If you think of it before you twist off the bolts you're way ahead of the game. Someone recently showed me that if you draw a bead of weld around the inside of a bearing race they will all but fall out when they cool. It's just like magic.

Well the rusty side is done and none twisted off. I did have to weld nuts over the top to hold onto. My Sears open ends wanted to spring too much. I ground the nose down on a box end so that I could slip it under the tip of the bolt sticking through the nut. That gave me enough grab to get the job done. Some frog wizz overnight might have helped a bit too.

When you put it back together, put lock washers under the bolts, that will help a lot. Most people, myself included don't remember to do this.
