diesel in oil 440icd

Post by 440dozer » Mon Sep 28, 2009 4:38 pm

dozer has been sitting for about six months and I pulled the dipstick to check the oil and it is overfilled. Looked watery and smells like diesel (why I am assuming it is diesel) . Didn't have or notice this problem when I parked it. What happened or went wrong?

Based on previous topics and discussions on this site, it sounds like your diesel injection pump seals are leaking and allowing diesel to fill the crankcase. However I am not all that familiar with the 440ICDs.

I realize this is an old post and I hope you have since cured the problem. If you have not, the first thing to do is put in fresh oil so you can start the engine safely. Then remove the valve cover and watch for fuel bubbles floating around in there around the fuel lines the connect to the injectors. These are prone to cracking, ESPECIALLY when over-torqued. They do not need to be that tight. The lines are available from any Detroit dealer and are not that expensive. If this is not the problem it could be an injector, or the supply pump seal, or even a head cracked in just the right place but I would expect that to be the last place to look.
