420 final drive castings ?

Post by mapaduke@yahoo.com » Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:04 pm

i have been hooked on the 2 cylinder john Deere crawlers for about 2 years now and i just picked up a 420 for parts and it has 2 different inner final drive housings.i know its common to see 420s on an mc or 40 but these are quite different than what i have been seeing. one i think might be a universal housing.it has 2 barrel type caps to adj the throwout barring.one front and one rear also a 3/4 pipe plug at the bottom wear the brake rod would be if it was installed on the opposite side.the other one is very strange it has no barrel type covers at all not even the raised boss in the casting wear the caps wood screw in??.someone used a torch and burned a hole about the size of a quarter to adj the throwout barring.it dose have the 3/4 pipe plug on the bottom like the other side.both have the standard square axcess covers on the top.
thanks for any info.

MC housings did not have the large round hole for adjusting the clutch. It may be a replacement part meant for one of those.

That is the replacement track clutch housing that was sold in later years. It will cover both sides with only one part number, so that is what they went to.
