Adding reverser to a 420
I saw a reverser on ebay not too far from my house. I have a reverserless 56' 420C with a 4 speed, what would be needed to install this on my crawler, is it a pretty involved job?
Yes, Lots Of Work....... But There Was A Hydo. And A Gear Reverser Avalible.. Each Needs Different Bell Housing.... I Think You Need A New Input Shaft For The Transmission And A New Bell Housing... So That Means Major Tear Down.... I Dont Think I Would Attempt That Project.... Also You Cant Use The PTO And Reverser At The Same Time..... (Reverser Changes The Direction Of Your PTO..)

It is more work on a 56 than it is on the later 420's. You need to remove the center section, there is a small amount of grinding that you will need to do, one hole that may need to be reamed out, and the brake pedal cut off somewhat. It is not all that bad to do, the major work will be splitting it.
The other problem that you may have, is the earyl 420 uses a coarse spline input shaft, so the "direct drive member" is different than on the later 420's. It is likely that the reverser you saw on E-bay will be the fine spline member, so you would need to change that. I believe that I still have access to a new coarse spline member, but they are kind of pricey, and finding them used is almost impossible.
All that being said, you will love a reverser, especially if you do much dozer work with the crawler. If you do get it and decide to do it, let me know and I will check on the direct drive member, and I can get you a photocopy of the instructions for field installation of reverser in early 420's.

Hi,
There was a Hydro reverser for the 420? I don't recall that one, just the Gear and Differential styles. I thought that the Hydro didn't come along until the 1010 series. Learn something new every day!

I wonder if he didn't mean clutch type as apposed to gear type.
The clutch type reverser was only on the very last production 420's, after serial number 131,309.
I have had many people think that because the late 420, 430 and 440 crawlers had a clutch type reverser that you did not need to use the engine clutch when shifting. This is not the case, you still need to use the main clutch, unlike the 1010 which has no main clutch if it has a reverser.
I have also seen the 1010 reverser referred to as a hydrostatic unit which it is not, it is a full hydraulic clutch type reverser, with ydraulicly actuated and cooled clutch packs.
