JD Industrial Yellow Paint

Post by Ben.Ehrhart » Tue Nov 03, 2009 8:11 pm

Does anyone have a good source for industrial yellow paint? The local dealership has it for $74 a gallon -- this sounds a little expensive. Is it available in spray cans?

Ben,
$74 a gallon is NOT expensive for paint. The rattle cans from the dealer are about $10 a can and it doesn't go very far with the yellow which doesn't cover well. Also the consistency out of the rattle can tends to be thin and runs very easily. If you only have a little to do it is the easy way to do it though. Remember there is a difference in color between the early and later Deere industrial yellow, break was early 90's I believe. The early has a bit of a orange hue to it.

I bought paint from valspar online. Color is right and so was the price. I do not remember exactly how much I paid so it could not have been outrageous. Outrageous prices I remember! I am brush applying the paint to the undercarriage and lower frame rails. No problems so far. I have not used the paint in a spray gun so I cannot attest to it's performance using that application process. Mark

I use Tractor Supply's Transport Yellow too. I have used it for about 10 years. It is made by Valspar. At $30 a gallon or $5 a rattle can, it is a decent deal. Like KenP said it very very close to the color I find on the original painted sections of various JD440 crawlers and tractors.

I use my JD440's for work so I expect some scrapes and scratches. A spray can touch up is all I need to keep things looking decent and protected from rust. If I put on a new part I can spray it quickly to match. Plus my Tractor Supply almost always has it in stock. If I was doing a restoration project I would likely go for the "correct" JD paint. It is a better product and I always feel better spending more money when I am trying to do a pristine restoration.

You cannot buy paint online from Tractor Supply but you can see their product at the link below:

$75 is reasonable if you want to be sure you got the right color (from Deere).

I got a gallon of oil paint mixed at a paint store for $30, and it's better paint than the weird stuff Deere is selling now. Downside was it took them forever to find a card matching the color, then they screwed up the actual mix. I had them do it again and they screwed it up again. Ended up playing with adding orange and yellow until it matched up with a rattle can from Deere.

i am glad somebody spoke up,
i went and got some transport yellow(valspar brand) and yes it does look good,
2 gallons for less than one at deere, plus i like the fact that i can get a rattlecan for touch ups,,,
so the next question is, did anybody use primer,, the red or the gray???

bringing up this old subject of paint once again,,, i did use the Valspar in gallon cans and now am doing touch up work with rattle cans and see a very noticable difference in the shade of paint,,, the rattlecans are about 2 shades lighter(brighter yellow)(like cat),, anybody else seeing this?

A buddy of mine ordered a case (12 cans) of JD Ind Yellow and the markings on the box were "Valspar".
Some will say that it is a "different recipe". I cannot argue that because I do not have access to the formulas, but I can share this with you.
A bunch of the price difference is profit. JD sells it to the dealer at about what retail at TSC is. That says something in itself. If it had special stuff in it, it would really cost more.
The dealer typically has about 25% to 35% mark up on each can. I am guessing that JD has about that much. So the net price ends up being around the same wholesale price as TSC would pay.
It may have some different "stuff" in it, but I cannot tell the difference except in my wallet.

I would expect a difference in the shade of the color over 2 years. That color seems to go from bright to dark to faded in a relatively short period of time. Between trying to match the JD blend and all the areas of varying shades I have given up on the yellow and am just going to leave it alone until I can disassemble the crawler and put it back to green.

I have used the TSC Industrial Yellow but have not had it out of the shed to see what the sun and elements do to it compared to the over priced brand.
BUT, I have used the TSC regular yellow on a JD M on the front and rear rims and the rear weights. It runs in the sun all summer with a No 20 sickle mower. I used the other brand on my 730D. I cannot tell a bit of difference in the way the two are "getting older." The TSC paint is now 2 years old on the M.
My jury is still out on the Ind Yel.
