420c lights
I have replaced my burnt out headlamps withwagner pn# 4511 which is a 6 volt 30 watt (I wish to maintain the 6 volt system) but the sealed beam is slightly smaller in diameter than oe . Does anyone have a pn# that would be a better fit? Thanks Keith

Hi,
Wow. And I mean WOW!
I ought to sell the lamps off my 420c in this case! They're still original and still work. Even the oddball rear one with the hole in the reflector plating on the inside of the thing and the ruby coating on the outside.
For those that don't follow that, there's a small 6v bulb inside the lamp housing, but outside the sealed beam that shines through that ruby coating when the ILBD switch is in the D (for Dim rear) position. That gives a single, dim red light to the rear for road use after dark - as in a taillight.
Obviously, there were a lot more dirt roads back in 1958!
If the main lamps fetch $100 each what does that oddball dual purpose, rear one sell for??
Until I read this thread today, I'd never given the lights on the old girl a second thought. They're there, they work, and I rarely ever use them. Next time I'm working on her, I think I'll pull the original lamps off for more modern and readily available ones and box the originals up against the day I might actually restore her.....
Later!
Stan
p.s.
ILBD means the ignition switch.
I = Ignition only
L = ignition and front Lights
B = ignition, front lights and Bright rear light
D = ignition, front lights and Dim rear light

Only the sealed beam for the tear drop style guide housing will bring that. Most 420's had the standard bulb style lights on front, when I have them, I sell brand new repro's for $35. The tail lights used to bring better money, but since the new ones came out, the market pretty much died. I have probably a dozen new ones on the shelf, $50/each.

Hi,
Oh! Now I get it. The ones worth all the money are what I always called the 'old' lights. That'd be referenced to the 'new' lights which is what's on the old girl. This is why I was so surprised, as I never thought of the 'new' lights as being anything special. I always thought of the old lights as being pre-420, and so became confused.
Well, the lights are on there and behind the guards on the front and there's never been an issue with any of them, so I rather tend to ignore them unless I'm forced to plow snow at night.
That was something that happened once in a while when I lived in upstate NY, but I can't see it ever being an issue down here in NC. Heck, if they even mention snow in the forecast, the schools all go on a delay or even close before the stuff starts. Oh, and the stores all sell out of bread and milk. What folks do with all that bread and milk during a snow that they don't on normal days escapes me. I figure they all make milk sandwiches! :p

Stan,
I lived over in Morganton,NC over in the foothills for 10 years and it was the funniest damn thing to watch the grocery stores empty out on the forcast of a little snow, and it usually didn't even snow!! I figured that the weather forcasters were getting a kickback from the grocery stores!!

Hi,
That might be it! Yes, I can see it now: A TV weatherman and a store manager whispering in the back corner where the dairy case wall meets up with the back wall of the store!
Maybe it started in the days when the milk came from a local dairy and the bread from a local bakery and all four were in on it!
