Shifting pattern on 440

Post by Hilltop » Fri Jan 15, 2010 9:35 am

I have a later model 440 gas with the 5 speed tran. The shift pattern is not the same as it shown in the service manual. The reverse and second gear is opposite of what it says it should be. Reverse is to the top left and 2nd is to the bottom left. In the manual it says reverse is supposed to be in the bottom left. Is it possible to have put these gears in wrong when the transmission was rebuilt? I am sure the gears are in the same spot they were when it was taken apart but they may have been put in wrong at an earlier rebuild before we got the dozer. Is this possible?

Hilltop,
No, It is correct. The Later "large" 5 speed transmission has reverse as you say "top left" with 2nd "bottom left".

It is one of the older transmissions that is how your manual shows.

Thank you for the response. I thought I was losing it while looking at the book and wondering if it was possible to have mixed something up in the transmission
