....and while you're at it.....

And it is easy to get to.....

How about the non major stuff? Bearings/brushes in the starter/generator? Water pump?? Hydr pump?? What should be rebuilt while it's easy to get at. All was working prior to the full tear down. The water pump and hydr pump are NOT easy once it's back together but the gen/starter are fairly easy.

It's just sitting there :? Is now the time to rebuild those too   More money, more time....

I would look at any component that is difficult to fix once everything is back in place. Anything that is reasoably priced, I would replace or repair while I am there. I have a 420 in the shop now for an engine rebuild, and am disassembling the hyd pump today. Nothing wrong with it, but if the o-ring starts to leak 6 months from now, what a pain in the rear to pull it off again then.

The generator is probably the easier unit to remove once it is all back together. Starter is a little harder with everything in place. Both are easy to rebuild.
I am currently rebuilding those on my 440IC. They were both working, but who knows how much longer, or how long it has been since they were serviced.
I am also converting them to 12 volts. The gen gets a new armature, field coils, brushes, springs, flat head bolts, etc. The starter does not get a new armature but gets basically everything else.
If you are going to keep it, and you have the time and money, NOW is the time to rebuild anything you can. If it is not broken or leaking right now, imagine how long it will last once you bring it back to factory specs.

Hi,

A couple years ago, my lower radiator hose from 1958 popped. What cheap junk, eh? So, I put in a new radiator, new water pump, new belt and new upper hose while I was at it.

It's a PIA to pull the grille guard to do any of that more than one time, see.

Well, I forgot to get new rubber mounts for the radiator. The old ones *looked* fine. I decided not to wait for new ones, as it busted when I was using it for a job - well they never bust just sitting in the barn, now, do they?

I'm waiting for them to let go and then have to go back in after them. We all know it's going to happen, don't we?

I say to tear it *all* down, inspect, measure, repair and replace as needed. Then, you *know* it's all good.

Easier said than done, though. :!:

later!

Stan,
Hate to tell you this, but when the rubber mounts failed on one of my 420's years ago, it knocked a hole in the bottom of the top radiator tank.
