420 cam bearings

Post by Pistonman » Mon Mar 08, 2010 1:49 pm

I finally got my block back from the machine shop. I brought new cam bearings , and we installed them when I picked it up. Today I realized that the rear bearing is not in far enough for the cam (core) plug, also I am not sure if the bearing is oriented properly...the hole is lined up with the oil feed hole in the block for the cyl head, I know it is wrong. Looking at the service manual(SM-2019) the drawing shows the oil hole towards the front of the block, but the picture (photo) and text show it towards the rear. The parts book picture shows the hole towards the front. It says for in depth cam bearing install, see SM-2013 which I do not have. Anyone know the proper orientation for for the rear cam bearing?

Lavoy is a great help. I have assembled three engines during the last two years. My manual (must follow the manual) is SM-2037 Page 50-20-9, states Install new bearings into bores making sure oil holes in bearings are approximately center over oil slots in camshaft bores. The front edge of the front brg should be .015-.025 inch below face of cambore, middle brg centered in its bore, rear brg should 1/4 inch below the face of its bore. It is amazing how fast I can forget please do not let me lead you wrong, this is may reference. I am not computor savy and I do not know if I am doing this right but here goes..Engine 165diesel block casting T16162T or T17513T..for 2010JD

The hole in the bearing lines up with the oil galley slot in the bottom of the bushing bore. This will give you enough room for the cam plug, do not seat it too deep.

Thank you. It is in upside down and not deep enough. I don't have the driver, so it is back to my machinist 75 miles away.
