PTO driven hydraulic pump?

Post by jackhdn » Thu Jan 05, 2006 9:35 pm

Hi Lavoy,

I have a Ramsey hydraulic winch mounted on my 440. I had been running it of of a crankshaft driven pump. The old pump failed and I decided to replace it with once driven off the PTO. This way, I only run the pump when I need the winch and avoid alot of heat and use of power.

My question is, should I worry about the weight of the Prince pump riding on the PTO shaft? Pump weighs about 43 pounds. Not sure if its a reasonable worry about burning up my outer needle bearing in the housing or not. Thanks.

Jack,
I don't think it will be too bad. I would make sure that you have good seals in the PTO so that the needle bearing is well lubed. I might also fill the PTO with oil while it is off so you can get a little more in there. Also make sure that the pump can't twist somehow and jam a fitting against something so you are putting a lot of odd stress on the shaft.

Thanks Lavoy. I appreciate the advise. I'll fill it like you said and see how it goes.
