Gearmatic 8A Winch Mounting?

Post by muleman » Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:39 pm

I've been watching this great website for about 5 years now, but never registered because of slow dial-up connection. Now I'm high-tech with a new lap top and wireless connection so I decided to sign on and quit bothering Lavoy with phone call questions. First, hello to all those crazed lovers of tracked 2-bangers (thats bangers not hangers ) - your discussions provided me a great deal of insite when I was rebuilding/ restoring my 1957 420C 4-roller with 62 blade. Also, alot of info. gleened for reverser issues I faced on my more recently acquired 1960 440ICD with 831 loader (only 935 original hours). Thanks for your help. Anyhow, I am in the midst of rebuilding a Gearmatic 8A winch and through the help of Lavoy and an 8A winch manual kindly furnished by Paul Buhler, have finally got it nailed. My concern now becomes appropriately mounting the winch to my 420C because I have never physically seen a 420 with an 8A mounted on it. Lavoy has nice close up pics of of his 430 restoration that show the winch with two top rods bolted to the tractor sideframes. My question is that other than bolting the adaptor plate to the rear transmission housing and connecting the two top rods to the sideframe (which I will have to fab), are there any other supports? I also ask this question because along with the winch, adaptor plate, and master control came two "dogbones" and an angled bracket that the seller nor I know nothing about.

I would appreciate any feed back or if someone has any good close up pictures of how their Gearmatic 8A winch is attached to their tractor, I would owe you for sharing them with me.

While I'm all pumped up here finally submitting a message, I will also try to post a link to my photobucket file of crawler photos in the show and tell section since it seems photo submissions have slowed up this winter.

Happy Crawling! Kyle "The Muleman"

Nice job on the 420. I have a 1956 with an 8A on it. Starting a rebuild, just got the engine back from the machinist... The crawler is still together, I was just looking at winch mounts today to prep for disassembly. I can take some pictures tomorrow and try to post them, or just email them to you.

hello, I believe those dog bone brackets were used to mount the gearmatic winches when the crawler had a loader. My boss has a pair of them on his mongrel 430 crawler (has late 440 tranny and final drives), I will see about getting a pic today when I am up to his place.

Pistonman - Thanks for posting the pics. Looks like just the rods and adaptor plate bolted to tranny housing are only connections for mounting winch to a 420. Good luck in your rebuild.

Thanks for the pictures, I had always wondered how the thing mounted up since I want to install one someday.

Here's the 3 pics that got away...
