440 ICD

Post by lastchancegarage » Mon Jan 09, 2006 8:28 am

I picked up a 440 crawler this past fall. Hope to get some pictures in here to show what I'll be dealing with. I've never had a dozer so the learning curve should be pretty high. Biggest problem is steering. It only steers to the right. Even that's starting to fade. Paid $2500 so I wasn't expecting a creampuff. Hope to figure out the steering clutch assemby adjustments before spring. If anyone knows where I can find any literature (service manuals) on this machine, I'd appreciate it.

There is a member on here that has conveted the 440 parts books to CD, you will need to search the board some, but it is there. His name is Brad Kahler.

CD Manuals

Post by lastchancegarage » Tue Jan 10, 2006 8:24 am

Lavoy, Thanks for the info. Brad will be sending me a CD soon. As I told him in my email, the 440 was in rough shape when I got it. The previous owner had put 2" angle over the hyd track adjusters to keep the tracks tight. I'm just a little nervous a rock between the sprocket and track could pop something. I'm not sure how tough it will be to get the hyd adjusters off so I can rebuild them. One question I do have is when I start it up at night you can see a spark now and then come out the exhaust. Is that just carbon flaking off from the cylinders? You can only see it when it's dark outside. Engine sounds good otherwise. Just wondering if this is something that should concern me.

Sounds like carbon, I have had several of mine do it to.
