1959-60 440ICD
Hey all, been doing some research on here and suppose it time for me to add a ? or two.
I'm starting a rebuild project of my grandpa's old 440 ICD. Not sure if its a 59 or 60 because the serial tag has rusted and fallen off, going to keep looking for it though.
First question is: I've looked at numerous pictures and am wondering why on some the battery is right in front of the instrument panel and some its on the left fender. Looks like mine should be on the left fender but I want to know for sure.
Second: What about the hydraulics. Mine has a single remote and has the base manual angle blade. I've saw some with a hydraulic lever on the right side of the instrument panel. Mine has everything mounted to the right fender. Is this correct?
Thanks for the help and great site you guys have here.

Basically, if the throttle is on the left and swings up, it is a 1959. If the throttle is near the center and goes straight up, it is a 1960.
The hydraulic controls on the ICD are on the fenders due to space restraints of the diesel air cleaner and plumbing. The battery is on the left fender on all of the ones that I see due to typical hydraulic lines crossing in front of the dash area.
I like the battery in a box on the fender, much easier to get to it.
Look through your service and parts books and you will see these differences.

Thanks JD440. Thats pretty much what I figured was the diesel took up more room under the hood so the stuff was put on the fenders.
Glad you commented on the throttle lever, that was another ? I had. Ours is on the top left corner so sounds like its possibly a 59.
Most of the pics I saw of diesels had the stuff on the fenders I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks

JD 602 - Manual angle only, outside mount.
JD 63 - Manual angle and manual tilt, inside mount.
JD 64 - Hydraulic angle and hydraulic tilt, inside mount (the best one IMO)
All have hydraulic up and down of coarse.

I saw a 63 in Georgia recently that someone had added a tilt cylinder to and it looked pretty decent. If you are not concerned about originality and don't mind welding on it, it can be done. But once you do that, it would take a lot of work to get it back to an original looking 63.

Hi,
Wasn't there also a tilt version of the outside mount blade?
Seems to me that I've seen those, although I can't recall the model number. Or, am I thinking about a blade on a 1010?
I know the 350 had an outside blade with angle and tilt, as the one I had was like that. But, I seem to recall seeing the same on industrial versions of either the 1010 or the 440.....
I wish I still had that 350. I liked the nice, wide blade on that and it was a *lot* easier to angle than the 62 on the 420c.....
later!
Stan
