JD 440IC - Push/Stall Problem

Post by cdstech » Sat May 15, 2010 10:06 am

Replaced the steering clutches on the left side and got everything back together. In first or second gear everything is good until you put the blade down. It stalls within a few seconds, the linkage on the carb and gov seems to be working just fine, I can see the linkage moving to adjust for the load but it is just not enough. If I try to pull out in third gear, with the blade up, just stalls right out.

I have not adjusted the breaks or the steering levers since I replaced the left side so I am assuming I should start with this.

I am just looking for some helpful insight and information on the best way to do this, and do I start with the brakes or steering first.

Thanks for any input or helpful information you can pass my way.

sounds to me like you may not be getting enough fuel. i would check the sediment bowl and make sure that you have a good flow coming out of the fuel tank, maybe try some carb cleaner too.

Hi,

Take a look at that strainer screen *inside* the carb. It's part of the fuel line inlet elbow. Those never get cleaned, because most folks never knew they were in there. Out of sight = out of mind, you know!

Anyway, they can be half clogged and let enough fuel in for light running yet not let enough in for hard work, and then you get the symptom you described.

later!

Could be several things.
The valves set at the same gap, 0.15, on all 4 and you set them COLD.
Could be a compression issue.
Could be timing. Use a timing light and set the distributor to where SPARK is lined up in the window on the side of the crankcase.
Make sure the points are gapped correctly. Change the spark plugs if they need it.
As others have stated, could be carb. Partially blocked, or need setting.
Let us know how you progress.
One other thought, make sure your air cleaner is not restricted.

A corollary to the above post; check the centrifugal advance while you have the timing light out. The advance springs are known to rust apart in long stored crawlers (some brands of distributors are worse than others).
