1960 440 ICD
1960 440 ICD
Just got one, don't really know anything about them but for free I couldn't turn it down.
Here are the issues I'm having:
No clutch, feels like the pedel isn't connected to anything.
Left turning stick doesn't work, I looked in the inspection holes and it moves the clutches but doesn't stop the track.
Starts (with ether), doesn't Idle, and will randomly die and not want to run anymore.
Lower radiator hose has a hole in it, how do you go about getting it out to replace it.
What I've done to it:
Changed the oil (added seafoam to clean it because there was some water in it)
Added seafoam to fuel to clean injectors.
What do you guys think?

The clutch pedal may be disconnected, look closely at all of the linkage and see. If nothing external, then you will need to split it.
Steering clutches could be an adjustment, or could be swelled from moisture. First thing to get is factory parts and service manuals and read up on the afflicted areas, that will give you a good starting point.

I 2nd what Lavoy says about the manuals. The best mechanics are only guessing at some of the settings, etc. on these. Get it right the first time and save yourself $$$ by not messing up other things by guessing.
I would be very cautious with the starting fluid.
If it will not keep running, it is only running basically on the fluid. Need to find out if it is getting fuel.
The manuals explain each sub system on the crawler. Many times, and in your case, there are several sub systems that need attention. For instance, you know you have compression, and that the valves are set close enough for it to run. You either have a bad fuel pump, do not have fuel to the injectors, or injector issues.
Ask plenty of questions and keep us posted on your progress.

It needs the starting fluid to get it going when it's cold. It runs actually quite well, but it will start missing, then bog down and die. From that point if you let it sit for a bit, it will start again and run for a 30-40 min then the cycle repeats.
I'm thinking injectors, but I'm not sure. My manuals havn't shown up yet, I ordered them yesterday.
It's a cool toy, and for free I couldn't turn it down. Never had a tracked rig before, but looking forward to tearing into it.

WOW, can you get me a free one like that?
Looks really nice. That is the model 91 loader. A few adjustments and you will enjoy that machine.

You might want to search for 'mouse turds' on here (just one possibility already posted). The 440 series is acknowledged as the choice for robustness combined with parts availability (still some work tho). The 2-53 stuff is available from Detroit & there were a blue million produced. Overall, I'd say you're sitting pretty!
Neat looking old girl, you did well.
Most of the 2-53 detroits will need ether to start unless they have had N series pistons installed.
I agree on the fuel obstruction, very unlikely it is injectors. Replace the fuel filter, check the lines, clean the tank, I bet you will find it.
The loader is an 831. Someone had put 1010 or 350 rails and disc front idlers on it, pads look good, again, you did well.

Well, I looked at the fuel lines today, no clogs. Thinking maybe injectors because instead of the usual starting and running for a bit, today it started, moved about 5 feet then died and that was it. Question I'm having is, can I do a compression check, if so how?
On a side note, I moved part of the throttle linkage around today, because the piece on the right in the picture is on a cable, like a machanical choke, but when you move the lever the cable moved the piece up and down but it was free from the throttle linkage. I put it as the picture shows because that's how it makes sence in my head. DOES IT LOOK CORRECT?

It is not a choke but a fuel shut off. The only way to shut down a diesel is to either stop the fuel (or shut off the the air) since there is no spark like a gas engine.
I cannot tell from the picture if it is connected preperly. Your service manual will explain it.
