model 40 steering clutch housing

Post by neil » Tue Jan 24, 2006 8:04 pm

I just inherited a model 40 crawler. Both clutch sides were sort of recently (within 4 years) redone. I have no firm list of parts used just a memory that forgets to get used. There is a lot of oil in the left side but the right side is dry. The old 'pussycat' has been commercial fishing in northern Manitoba for 3 generations now and has a history of being on the wrong side of the ice at least twice. Ice may be a factor (crack) but I don't think so. She runs good and my dad put a small home made blade out front with a 19" hydraulic driven ice auger on the back that can be removed quickly for pulling. It works really good except for the lack of turning to the left. How many ways can a lot of oil get in there? I'm assuming it's coming from the final drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is either coming from the pinion shaft seal on the final drive, or the seal around the ring gear carrier, only two places.
