final drive seals 420c

Post by homer420c » Thu Jan 26, 2006 10:20 pm

I ve now torn down my 4 final drives( 2 from my parts 40c) and salvaged the best pieces to use as I reassemble. Each of the 4 pieces had its own story.
One had 90wt that was thicker than tar and blacker than a dark hole, but the gravel in it was all less than 1/4 inch.
Another had lube in it at one time, but there was nothing to drain.
The third one had been full of water, probably many seasons, but had frozen the bottom case, and managed to keep itself drained.
My favorite, the fourth, also had a hole in the bottom cover, and the mechanic rebuilding it just knew a cast iron repair wouldn't last so he pumped the entire case full of grease. This one was in the best condition.
Lavoy:
Do you have a pinion? M2362T,16 tooth. Also,I read here somewhere that installing the axle seal is best accomplished with the JD tool. May I borrow yours?

Craig,
I have new pinions for sure, maybe a used one.
I will have to check, I think all my tools are loaned out right now, but otherwise yes you can.

I nned a pinion. Every other part appears very ggod. Sell me a good used
(I like the $100 model!) or new. How much is the new? I do need seal tool,so we will just ship when tool is available.

thank you,Craaig

I may recall some discussion of using the sleeve seal repair kit. what is your method for installation?

New pinion gears are $100.
You need to use a piece of PVC pipe or a PVC fitting of some sort to get the sleeve all the way on. I use a reducer bushing, but had to open it up a bit on the turning lathe.
