Gearmatic winch 8G

Post by gregjo1948 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 1:01 pm

I have a 1010c with an 8G gearmatic winch. It is Pto operated and thats all I know. Will someone explain how it works? There are 2 levers, one looks like an E brake on a car, mounted on the right fender and the other on the right side(looking from rear of dozer) of the winch. Thanks, gregjo1948

The short lever is the shifter to put the winch in and out of gear, you must also have the PTO in gear. The large lever on the fender is the brake. Push it one way to engage, the other way to disengage for freespooling. IF you have a reverser, NEVER engage the reverser to power out the cable unless you have first disengaged the brake.

gregjo1948: Send me your email and I'll send you an attached .pdf of the Gearmatic 8a/g manual. I found it useful when working on my winch. Good luck with yours. Paul

It won't freespool like an electric winch you see nowadays, you will probably have to hook it to something and pull it out.
Make sure the winch is out of gear, make sure the brake is disengaged.
