440 crank case oil coming out of oil dip stick

Post by 440icd » Wed Apr 20, 2005 8:13 am

Hello,
I have a 440 icd
I noticed that there is oil coming out of the dip stick oil hole.
Get worse with rpm.
Seems to want to shoot out, even with dip stick in place.
Any ideas???
Maybe blower seal to block is leaking????????
What do you think?
Thanks

crank case pressure????

Post by 440icd » Thu Apr 21, 2005 7:31 am

The engine runs great with loads of power with clean exhaust.
Black smoke only when under a heavy load...
What do you think????

But.... I do notice that there is no blow by coming out of the valve cover vent cap any more.

Maybe it’s plugged up??????

Now that you mention it, there is a vent hole on the block, and I know on another Detroit I have seen blowby coming out of it, I think that a certain amount is normal.

crank case oil out of dip stick hole

Post by 440icd » Thu Apr 21, 2005 8:54 am

Lavoy,

Have you ever seen this before??

Where is the vent hole on the block?

I think there is a small copper tube that screws into the side of the block its on the opposite side of the blower , the end just hangs down. I bet that’s it.

1. what about theory that the rings are letting pressure into the crank case?? (The motor runs great)

2. Is it likely that the blower is bleeding air where the fuel pump is bolted to the block?

3. Is this condition related o the runaway condition that I have heard about???

4. ??????????

I have to check it out tonight....going to try and use it Sunday...help..

then she goes down for steering clutches

Thanks
Scott

From what I understand, extra oil that gets into the combustion chamber on a diesel engine can cause the engine to run faster as it's burned just like diesel is, whereas on a spark-ignition engine, that doesn't happen.

Yep I have seen allot of posts about that.
I was just wondering if this is a pre-curser to that condition.

I called the Detroit shop about the problem.
They said check all breathers and drains, most likely the problem.
We will see

Thanks

changed oil, blew out the crank case breather, and cleaned the breather on the valve cover.
Added some marvel mystery oil to it.

No more oil out the dip stick.
hummmmmmm.
Still not sure what’s going on.
But I do notice
Condensation or a bit more than that dripping from the breather ontop of the valve cover.
Almost like a slight amount of steam.
The oil in the crank case was clean not milky, just oily black.
Ran it an hour at 190 deg temp,

What do you think?
