420 track

Post by Greg L Brown » Thu Nov 04, 2010 10:12 pm

This last time the track came off, I noticed that many links were worn through and I could see the rod inside. But how do I fix that? I only have the owners manual.

Hi,

You probably also need all new everything else as well. Rollers, idlers, sprockets. As the chains wear, so do all the other undercarriage parts.

New 420 chains are no longer available. The chains for the later model JD350 are, but that means having to cut the teeth off the 420 sprockets and welding on a new 350 ring sprocket. That's a job for a machine shop.

You'd also then need a new set of 350 track pads as the 420 ones don't fit the 350 chains. Of course, if the chains are that worn then you probably need new pads anyway.

Later!

I think you are confusing your terms. I believe you mean the bushing is worn through and you can see the pin. The links are the side pieces that the pads bolt to. If your bushings are perforated, they were worn out hudreds of hours ago or more. To get to that situation, you would be at probably 200%-300% wear. Only fix is to replace your tracks or rebush the ones you have.

When you are considering your track options, include replacing your sprockets in your calculations. I am saying this considering the condition you said your pins and bushings are in. You may be able to live with your existing rollers and idler but you do not want to put on new (or newly turned) pins and bushings with a badly worn sprocket. You might try to post a picture of your sprocket here so members can give you a more definitive opinion after looking at the condition of the sprocket teeth.
