pin & bushing replacement

Post by mc_mike » Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:34 pm

How many ton press does it take to press out the pins and bushing in a 5 roller 420 track? I just bought one and the pins and bushings are shot. Where is the best source for these parts Deere or somewhere else? Any idea on part cost?

Pins and replacement

Post by country53 » Fri Feb 03, 2006 5:56 am

It takes around 60 ton and it also needs special dies for doing the job, its not something for the average home shop to do. Ther are special shops around that do just that. Pins and bushing are available from John Deere and other sources but when I checked John Deere was the most reasonable

bushing replacement on 440

Post by lastchancegarage » Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:52 am

Any idea what a ballpark cost per pin might be? I have a 440 where some of the bushings are worn pretty thin. :( I heard somewhere about rotating them but not sure how that would happen. :?

Pins and bushings for a 440 from Deere are about $1400.
Turning pins and bushings is by and large a waste of time. You will shorten the tracks a little bit, but will not do anything to remove the "snake".

Lavoy, Is that $1400 just for parts or is that the rough cost per track to have the job done?

No, that is just the parts cost, then labor is over and above that.
I do not use the Deere pins and busings, too expensive.
I charge about $950 parts and labor to do both tracks.

track work

Post by lastchancegarage » Fri Feb 03, 2006 10:24 am

Well, I hope when I'm ready to tear this puppy down I can fit both tracks in the trunk of my little diesel Jetta! Don't worry about having to put me up for the night, I've gotten used to crashing (sleeping) in the car at rest stops on my way down south for periodic training when it comes up. That's right, I don't like flying. :o Probably has something to do with being a former engine mechanic on A10's. I somehow feel the guy working on the airline engines doesn't look as hard as I did when overhauling engines. Besides, I've never been to North Dakota. Any Sprint Car tracks in your neck of the woods?

Two bare rails should easily fit in the trunk of a car.
We have a half mile dirt track 10 miles from me that is billed as the fastest track in the upper midwes. World of Outlaws comes every year in June or July, even filmed for ESPN a couple of times. On a good night they are consistently running at or under a 15 second half mile.

track job

Post by lastchancegarage » Fri Feb 03, 2006 1:14 pm

Hell, for a World of Outlaws dirt show, I'll fold down the back seat and tear out the passenger seat to make'em fit. :D It's been a while since I was able to watch a good dirt race. Last Outlaw show I caught was at Flemington NJ. (before pavement) I had to keep driving further and further as dirt tracks became paved. Given a little time, I'm sure we here at the LCG* could come with someway to get those tracks to you. Just one more item on the grocery list when I'm done with her. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Scott
