1010W? Engine worn out

Post by CC » Fri Nov 05, 2010 6:35 pm

My first posting! I have a 64 1010 crawler dozer (gas, 6way blade) with the engine plate - 1010W 52044. Is this a Wheeled tractor engine that someone installed? The engine's a goner - 90,120,75,20-compression. Besides the expensive JD parts overhaul, what are my options? Has anyone been able to install any other engines via fabrication of bellhousing, etc.(Diesel would be preferable like yanmar, deutz, perkins, etc.?) Hope I'm not insulting the die-hard JD purist out there! I'm not a collector, I would just like to get a few more years of use. The rest of the dozer is in fair to good shape. Any leads would be appreciated.

By the time you figure in the price of a used other brand engine, adapter plate fabrication, drive maching to get it hooked to the rest of the drivetrain and all the other assorted problems you will encounter, I doubt you will save a nickel over rebuilding the factory engine. Plus, when you go to sell it, deduct again for a non-factory engine.
Obviously it can be done, but the long term gain may not be as great as you think.

Are there any other options? Are there any JD gas engines besides the 1010 engine that will work as replacement? From reading some of the past posts, it seems there were only a small number of 1010's made so would finding a replacement engine in running condition be hen's teeth? How about that "W" on my engine plate, what does that designate? I understand that the crawlers had a "C". Thanks for your info. CC

They made something like 10,000 crawlers, I don't know how many tractors, swathers, combines, and power units with that engine, they are by no means rare.
Most likely someone took an engine out of a 1010W and put in your crawler.
As far as a used engine, what is to say the used engine you get is any different than the one you have, or will be in another 50 hours. Fix what you have, then you know what you've got unless you plan on rebuilding the used engine prior to install.

Hi,

Yep, that's sound advice. I always go by the rule that if the block is good, just rebuild the one in front of you. I can't tell you how many engines I've seen over the years that appear to be better than the one I had, yet were worse off once I got into them.

Oh, and I also go by the rule that any new engine that I have no experience with will get torn down and at least checked over before I go to the trouble of installing it. And, it's not just tractor engines I'm referring to here. I wouldn't just 'grab and go' with any used engine larger than a push mower takes. :P

There is nothing worse than going to all the trouble to install an engine only to fire it up and find out it's not nearly as good as you thought it was!

Honestly, for all the stories about 1010 engines out there they really are not all that bad to rebuild.

Later!

Stan

Thanks for the advice, I quess I'll attempt an overhaul. I was hoping for a quick engine swap to take advantage of the drought we're in and clean out some ponds. I'm really slow when it comes to overhauls. Does anyone have a good lead on a rebuild Kit for a 1010 gas? All I've been able to find is a few sites with misc. parts and not enough of everything for a total job. Even came up empty on the JD website. Did find one site with a rebuilt head. Appreciate the help, CC

I can get whatever you need. Best to have the crank out so you know what undersizes you need.

Hi CC-

Where are you at in MO? It sure has been dry here in west-central MO, and I have beent aking advantage of that to get my crawler functional again as well as get some ditch cleaning done with my Bobcat.

If you are near KC, I can attest that Lavoy can ship parts pretty reasonably and you will get exactly what you need.

The guys are right in saying a rebuild is your best bet.but if you are interested in a good used engine to swap quick I have one with low hours on a rebuild. The tracks went bad and just needed too much undercarraige attention to repair. I would give a guarantee on the engine. I just hate to see it sitting around with nothing to put it in.

More grist for the mill. An engine for sale in VT - gives an idea of price and condition.
