440 ICD Tracks
Just got my very first 440 ICD. It is an early 60's model with an 831 loader on it. One of my good friends told me that the tracks on the crawler are not the correct ones for the 440. They have a 4 bolt pattern where the correct ones should have 2 bolt holes. Also, since I have the loader I should have the flat pads to keep from stressing out the U/C. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some flat pads for the chain that I have or find a correct set of chains and pads?? All info and input is greatly appreciated! Thank You.

The 440s and 1010s/early 2010s used the same pitch tracks and same pin and bushing diameters. However the 440 tracks were 2 bolt and the 1010s/early 2010s were 4-bolt, and there were more track links on the 1010s and early 2010s than on the 440s. Thus you probably have tracks off of a 1010 or early 2010 dozer that were shortened for your 440.

Having grouser pads on a loader can stress the drivetrain due to the heavier weight and the additional grip they provide. If you can live without switching to original 2-bolt tracks (i.e. you want a working machine rather than a show machine), I think you can purchase new 4-bolt loader pads for the tracks you have.
If you want to switch back to 2-bolt tracks, you may have a tough time finding decent pads but Lavoy will know for sure. That is probably contingent on finding good 2-bolt rails, which also may be hard to come by.

Thank you for the information!! I am looking to fix the crawler up to use on my property. I might be looking to restore it some time later down the road. I have no problem using the chains that are on it but I also do not want to cause any unneeded stress on the rest of the machine. Any thoughts on where I might find some decent flat pads or anything else that might work?? Thanks again!!!

If you have 4 bolt rails, new 3 bar semi-grouser pads are still available. Last I checked, $15 or more each, but available.
If you are always on soft ground in the woods, grouser pads are not as big of an issue as they would be on hard compacted dirt or hard clay. It also depends on how high the grousers are. If they are only an inch or so high, not near as much stress as if they were new.

Hi,
Wasn't there a running change on the 440 series from 2-bolt to 4-bolt rails? I seem to recall such.
As far as the grousers go, if they're worn down and you run on dirt it won't be much of a problem. If you run on rock, though, it will stress several things, including the seat of your pants!
later!

Thank you for the info. The grousers seem to be in fairly good shape on the pads and stick up pretty high. The soil is almost all clay where I will be using it so I think I will keep my eyes open for some of the pads that Lavoy mentioned. Does anyone know where I might find some of these?

Does anyone know where I could get 2 new extra master pins for my tracks? When the one link was taken out of my set of tracks the ends of the master pin were smashed badly. I'm not even sure if it is the master pin but there is one pin on each side that looks different from all the others and there is no way to drive it out from the outside. Any ideas or recommendations? Thanks for the help once again.
