420 timing

Post by panhead » Sat Dec 11, 2010 4:40 pm

I have a 420, been fixin on it, off, and, on for the last year.
Had the engine rebuilt by a JD mechanic, yea right.
I have never had the engine fired.
I quit on it last spring, now I want it out of my shop.
NO, it isn't for sale, I have rebuilt everything, I need to get it running!
A couple of questions:
When I have the front cylinders piston, at the top on the compression stroke(both rockers can wiggle), with the DC in the timing hole, and the narrow part of the slot facing out, does the slot of the oil pump, run more or less parallel with the block?
If so is the slot more or less pointing at the 2 oclock, 8 oclock position, or the 4 oclock, 10 oclock position?
Thanks
Jim

Slot is roughly parlallel with the crankshaft, narrow side of the slot towards the block.
