One more track question....

Post by gus » Mon Dec 13, 2010 5:48 pm

The link measurement is easy to get wear percent. How about side play?

When a track is rolled out in a straight line, how much will it move to the side? I'm still trying to figure out a way to tell if the pins have been turned and I was wondering if this would be an indicator???

Any other way to tell?? Both 420 tracks I have do not indicate that the pins have been turned (loose pins, boss wear is minimal). One measures 100% wear the other 75%.

Pins and bushings are both turned together - If bushing is worn on side of the pad it has already been turned - if is nice and straight it has not been
Turning the pins and bushings does not take the sneakiness out of the tracks

I cannot feel any wear on the external sides of the bushings. Not even on the one measuring 100% wear. :?: :?:

Not even on the side that has run against the sprocket?

percentage of wear charts refer to the amount of wear left , not the amount of wear - could this be the answer?

Also track has to be in tension in order to get an accurate measurement of internal wear - you are measuring the stretch created by wear so just lying on the floor won't do it.

 Very poor choice of words on my part. I was thinking of deep sprocket groves I've seen on badly worn tracks but did not state that. Yes there is wear from the sprockets, but even all the way across.

I measured a new bushing and the old tracks. Not a good accurate measure as they are all coiled, but I did the best I could with a caliper.

One measuring 25% remaining only shows approx .012-.015 wear. Wear only appears to be on one side

The newer 4 bolt, also meauring 25-30% remaining showed .018--.022 wear. Wear appears to be on both sides, some pins welded in.

The oldest one 100% worn out was also .018-.022 wear. Wear appears to be on one side.

No welds on the first and third tracks. My best guess is that only the newer track has been worked on looking at the pins and boss wear.
