More 440 ICD rebuilding questions

Has anyone ever experienced a stuck brake lever on the steering lever shaft? Everything is working OK but I would like to free it up and have it work correctly. I would like to loosen it by not taking the whole assemble apart. Any suggestions?

i have a similar problem with my 420 on frosty mornings. i usually pull my steering levers back and forth before i puts her in gear but the brake band lever freezes up sometimes and it'll stick on. but i know it can be a pain in the ass. they usually free up on there own but one time i had to pull the clutch inspection plate off and back off the brake band adjustment to free it up.. i readjusted it after and never had problem . hope this helps.

It is not froze it is like the lever is welded to the shaft so I have no free movement of the brake rocker lever when I pull on the steering lever.

ok did you try and penetrating fluid spray around the shaft? must be rusted on

That and also heat no luck with either. I am just afraid to apply too much heat in case of doing any damage to it. I am wondering if the thing is stuck because of the old grease or just plain old corrosion, although it doesn't look corroded.

If you have stuck or frozen parts down in there it would be much better to take it down to the steering clutch and clean it up. Free up the parts and then put it back together.

Thanks. I was hoping I would not have to take it all apart. I think I will try more penitrating oil and maybe some more heat tomorrow first.

Opening it up may ne the best option. Those are dry clutches and the least bit of oil of any kind will require new disk.

If you are talking about the lever that the brake band hooks to, you should be able to get it with penetrating oil. Dead center inside the casting is a groove that can be packed with grease. If you drill a hole through the casting, you can get penetrating fluid in there and get it to loosen up. On more than a few, I have put in a 3'16" "drive" grease zerk and greased them, then the problem is gone forever.

Thanks for the tip. Had to heat and quick cool it a couple of times along with the penetrating oil but finally got it loosened up worked some grease into it and now it works like a charm. Thanks again.
