440 diesel starter
440 diesel starter
Just bought a 440 diesel and I smoked the starter. Not exactly sure why if the switch stuck or what, but I had smoke literally coming out of the end of the starter. I left it idle for about 5 mins while I was doing something else and then I noticed my slight electrical issue not a good day. Do I go to Detroit or JD for a starter? Or?

Unless you own stock in either and want try to make it go higher, I would pass on those two and instead go to your local alternator/generator shop. There are not that many parts in them to begin with. If it shorted the armature, you can get rebuilt ones. Could be a fried solenoid.
Might want to look on Ebay, there are several suppliers of generator parts on there.

nothing crawles like a deere
I bought a starter for my JD440ICD in December 2005 from www.the-co.com. I had to send in the core but could do it after they sent the starter. It was not on the web site. I had to call them.
I got the new starter in the winter and replaced it sitting in the field during a snow storm. The crawler had a Model 831 loader on it. I don't remember just how I did it, but I was able to remove and replace the starter without removing any major components but I did need to remove a few structural ones. AND I remember that it was quite a "fun" experience.
The new starter has performed flawlessly since then.

I have to second the suggestion of a local alternator repair shop- I had looked into buying a rebuild from online sources and got the same product for half the cost from rebuild at a local shop. Also you are sure to get the right part because it came off your machine.
If anyone ever needs a recommendation for a local shop in the Kansas City area, let me know.
