How big of a plow for a MC

Post by Denis in MI » Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:40 pm

I have a 3-14 trailer plow that I wanted to try behind my MC this spring in some heavy graound, will I be able to pull it or am I asking for trouble. Maybe I should look for a 2 bottom.

Thanks for any opinions,
Denis

3-bottom plow on an mc crawler

Post by doc40c » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:31 pm

hi Denis, my mt tractor pulls 2-14's nicely but 3-14 in heavy ground would be pushing it. if you only have a small area to plow then give it a try, if it seems to be laboring too much then you'll have your answer. i think the mc would be happier with a 2- bottom in heavy ground, but maybe some other's with more crawler-plowing experience will post a reply.

3-14's in heavy ground? I kind of doubt it's going to handle that very well, at least not in 2nd or 3rd gear. I've plowed wet clay ground pulling a 2-12 Oliver in 2nd with my 40 in fall. I've also used the same plow in spring to drain land. On light ground 2-14's might be okay. On heavy clay....I think it would really depend on the draft of the plow. I'd sooner see you use a smaller plow and do a better job than a larger plow and end up with a field that looks like an artillery range.

I think I will look for a 2 bottom, I have a 1 bottom trip plow, maybe I will try that first.

Thanks for the help,
Denis
