backhoe questions
I seem to have the occasional need for a backhoe and I'm thinking of putting one on one of my 420's. It would not be for heavy work. Mostly landscape or moving a log or rocks.
How hard is it to find one that fits a 420?? Can a thumb be put on these hoes?
Are there others that can be adapted?? I've looked at the ones on 20-30hp tractors and considered using one of those due to it being available locally. I also considered one of these because it looks lighter and would put less strain on the crawler.

Small Backhoes
Best bang for your buck will be a attachment off a small trencher, such as a Ditch Witch, Vermeer or Case. Make sure you go for one with stabilizers. We have put both adapted both a Ditch Witch and a Case attachment for a 350 dozer. We don't like to have to remove the hoe for doing dozing work, so these were he only option for a lighter hoe. We have since upgraded to 450 dozers which can handle a deere 9550 hoe alot better so we haven't used the two adapted hoes for a few years.
I don't think there were any factory mounts for rear mounted equipment on a 420 so you will have to construct your own.
My main concern would be the stress on the final drives. 420's were not made for this kind of weight on the back end and will most likely final drive cases will get scarce one of these days.

You will also want to make sure that the backhoe attachment is hydraulically compatible with the crawler hydraulics- meaning that you make sure both hydraulic systems are either open-centered or closed-center.
I don't know the particvulars of the 420s or of the aftermarket backhoe attachments, but am assuming that the crawler hydraulics are set up as open center. if you are using the crawler's current hydraulic pump to operate the backhoe and it is an open center system, you will want to make sure the backhoe attachment is as well. If not, then the hydraulic pump could detonate.
